A Question for the Ages

Home / Connect / Blog / A Question for the Ages
Android or Apple?
Paper or plastic?
What’s the meaning of life?
These are not uncommon questions. But, boy, the customer service call from Wayfair asked a question that beats them all.
Last month I placed my first order with Wayfair. Y’know “one of the world’s largest online destinations for the home”.
My ‘apartment home’ (as the marketing people say these days), has a large balcony overlooking a lake…just perfect for a hammock, I thought. So I bought one.
Apparently, the company has hatched a business buyer program. A company rep called to ask about my level of satisfaction with the recent purchase, and then nonchalantly spoke this sentence:
“Was your hammock bought for business or personal use?”
Let. That. Sink. In.
I suppressed a laugh, and tweeted the question when I got off the phone. It was fodder for a discussion with a friend and my younger son.
Hmmm. Apparently the person on the other end of the conversation imagined I had a very different kind of business…or did she?
Truth is, knowing myself, I will be writing articles like this on my laptop…in the hammock. It will likely be my go-to writing destination all summer.
My name is Marilee and – yes – you bet I bought a hammock for business use. And that thought makes me very happy.
Until next time
