Is there a correlation between likability and competence?
Or — put another way — if someone is nice, does that make them good at what they do?
There is NO correlation, though I wish there were.
It’s a joy to work with someone you like, who is extraordinarily talented at what they do.
But I’ll take a competent jerk over an incompetent nice guy (or gal) every time.
Now, if I like working with you AND you’re competent? Well, I’ll not only choose to hire you, but I also won’t be looking around for a better option, AND I’ll shout your name from the rooftops.
What’s the note to self?
Be the kind of person someone wants to work with. And, only do work that you’re really good at.
